Brett Armstrong’s eight-second HK Monaro makes nearly 1000hp aspirated and looks awesome doing it

WHEN it comes to cars that are the full package, it is hard to go past Brett Armstrong’s awesome ’68 Holden HK Monaro, PROHK. Despite being a full-weight street car, the big-hipped coupe has run a PB of 8.79@154mph at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland, and Brett brought it along to Street Machine Summernats 32 sporting a fresh engine poking through the Silver Mink bonnet.

“It is a 615ci Sunset big-block Chev with Dart SR20 heads, a Mark Sullins-built Dominator four-barrel carburettor and 14.8:1 compression, so we run it on E85,” Brett said.

Although it is lightning-fast, PROHK’s fat tyres and immaculately presented fit-and-finish allowed it to take on all comers in the hyper-competitive Tuff Street judging, scoring the Tuff Street Champion gong.

But Brett had something else on his mind. “I really wanted to run it on the dyno down here, but we are playing it really safe,” he said. “This is a fresh combo in the car and we haven’t had it on the dyno yet or even played with the tune.”

That made Brett’s Horsepower Heroes qualifying run on Saturday all the more impressive, stomping out 939hp at the hubs and sending the crowd in the MPW Performance Dyno Cell into wild applause.

Brett and his crew came back for the Sunday finals and made 936hp at 4485rpm, then 962hp at 5348rpm to take the win in the Eight-Cylinder Naturally Aspirated class of Horsepower Heroes.

“I’m stoked with that,” Brett said. “I can’t wait to take it home, give it a tune-up and then head back to the track. I’ve only had the car six months!”
