2019 Chevy Camaro facelift revealed

Chevy lifts the lid on the facelifted 2019 Chevrolet Camaro, while we're still waiting for the current-gen from HSV

THE current-gen Chevrolet Camaro hasn’t even hit Aussie showrooms yet, but Chevy has already released a facelift model. HSV will import and convert the Camaro to right-hand drive and distribute them through its extensive range of dealerships alongside the Silverado full-size pick-up which went on sale only a couple of weeks ago.

However, the Camaros that we are expected to receive initially are now already out-dated with Chevy today revealing its new facelift model. The key differences are in the front and rear end styling – most obviously, there is a new front grille and headlight design which incorporates a new ‘Flow tie’ hollowed-out badge for improved airflow.

The V8-powered SS in particular gets a more aggressive look with the centre of the front bumper blacked out and the bow tie badge moved downwards, giving it a look that’s reminiscent of the outgoing supercharged ZL1. The SS also gains tough-looking and apparently functional bonnet vents. Around the back there are also new taillights.

The LT1 6.2-litre V8 is unchanged and still produces 455hp/455 lb-ft in American-spec, however there is a new ten-speed paddle-shift automatic gearbox with launch control and line-lock functions. A six-speed manual is still available for those that want to row their own gears. Chevy hasn’t quoted acceleration figures, but the new auto is bound to be a smidge quicker than the outgoing eight-speed and less thirsty.

With the facelift, Chevy has also decided to give the four-cylinder turbo Camaro the 1LE treatment. 1LE is Chevy speak for track-ready – we’ve seen it before with the V6, SS and supercharged ZL1 Camaros before; the pack adds track-tuned suspension with larger stabilizer bars front and rear, stiffer rear cradle bushings, bigger Brembo brakes and fatter tyres. Outputs for the 2.0-litre turbo four-pot remain at 275hp and 295 lb-ft.

HSV is yet to comment when the facelift Camaro will be ready for Australia and has not confirmed whether the four-cylinder Camaro will be available in Australia. The Camaro is expected to go on sale in Australia in July.
