THE trailer for the latest and eighth instalment in The Fast and The Furious franchise, dubbed The Fate Of The Furious, has arrived. It includes most of the regular Furious cast members, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell, with the obvious exception of the late Paul Walker and his character Brian O’Connor this time ’round.

Interestingly, the villain in this film is played by Charlize Theron, who you’ll no doubt remember from Mad Max: Fury Road; The Fast And The Furiosa might have been a more appropriate title, don’t you think? Scott Eastwood and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren are also new.

This new movie is set in a variety of locations, including Cuba, Iceland and New York City. It’s the first major studio movie to be filmed in Cuba, and judging by a snippet of footage from this trailer, the film might take a look into that nation’s racing culture. Over in Iceland, there appears to be many explosions and some cool polar exploration vehicles – and a nuclear submarine.

As for the plot, the new movie appears to follow the franchise’s recent trend towards big explosions and violence and away from the racing that defined the earlier films. This time Dom (Diesel) finds himself seduced by a mysterious and decidedly evil woman (Theron), who ropes him back into the world of crime he left behind in Furious 7. It looks like Dom turns against his ‘family’, and the rest of the crew are on a mission to get him back.

As you’d expect, there will be a ton of cool modified cars in the movie. Just from this trailer we were able to spot a bunch of new Dodge Challengers, a C2 Corvette, a Lamborghini Murcielago, a tank and a very tough Plymouth GTX.

The film hits cinemas on 14 April, and looks set to continue the successes of The Fast and The Furious franchise, which has earned more than US$3.8 billion globally. Furious 7 is the sixth highest-grossing film of all time, with more than $1.5 billion at the global box office.
