A big crowd turned up to Penrith Lakes to remember car-building legend and Summernats judge Laurie Starling

NEARLY 100 street machines, hot rods and bikes rolled into Penrith Lakes in Western Sydney on Saturday, 27 September for the Laurie Starling Memorial Picnic.

They were joined by several hundred of Laurie’s friends, family and associates, all keen to remember the virtuoso engineer and Summernats judge who was taken from us by a senseless act of violence on 24 July this year.

The day was organised by Laurie’s car club, Negative Camber, with plenty of help from the Zero Altitude minitruck club, the Starling family and boys from Laurie’s business, The Chop Shop.

Cars on show included plenty of Street Machine legends, such as Sam Rayner’s H-BOMB, Brian Willis’s HK Monaro and Mark Hayes’s LC Torana.

The picnic was low on formalities, though Rob, Laurie’s father, announced the formation of a $5000 scholarship in Laurie’s honour for a young engineer, to be handed out at the Street Machine Summernats. Owen Webb was also on hand to announce a new Laurie Starling Engineering Excellence award for MotorEx 2015, consisting of a $5000 cash prize plus trophy.

With Laurie being a significant role model for young car builders, we’re sure both awards will be highly sought after.
