ULTIMATE Burnout Challenge (UBC) took over Winton Raceway in Victoria on the weekend for a one-day tyre-frying burnout comp. There was no cruising the track or anything like that; event organisers and legends of the burnout scene Steven Loader and Clint Ogilvie like to keep things simple, so we had skid after skid on Winton’s spacious main-straight burnout pad.

Loader reckoned this year’s field of cars and drivers was the strongest the event has ever had, and it’s hard to disagree. The number of blown cars was insane – over half the field, I’d estimate – and there was minimal LS limiter-bashing and just one six-cylinder car: Harry Seaman’s blown VK Commodore HAZARD, itself a really tidy car and a strong competitor for the eights.

Cars came from all over Australia too, with a whole truckload making the trek from West Oz to Melbourne. Justen Brown (STRUGLN), Matt Purnell (BLACK OUT), Matt James (UNWANTED), Mick Hamon (WIDE OPEN) and Tony Macro (KILLASLR) all flew in from the west to join the likes of Steve Nogas (KILLA-B), Andrew Lynch (LYNCHY), Peter Grmusa (F DIS) and too many other big names to mention.

The competition was so strong that the Top 20 finalists had to be extended to the Top 26, because so many guys ended up with the same number of points.

At the end of the day it was Rick Fuller in LSONE that cleaned up the $10,000 first-place prize ahead of Matt Purnell in BLACKOUT and Tim Brown in CEMBLO. Notable mentions to Andrew Lynch in LYNCHY – who like always did not hold back, even if it put him off the end of the pad a couple of times – young bloke Shane D’Amato in GHETTO for some very handy wheelwork in the final, and Matt James in UNWANTED for what would have been an insane skid if car troubles hadn’t intervened shortly after that crazy high-speed tip-in. Trent Brooks also would have been up there had his blown Commodore wagon QUIET 1 not erupted in flames!
