LIKE the sound of HSV’s new LS9-powered 635hp GTS-R W1 but can’t stomach the crazy $170,000 price tag? Well something like this VE Calais that the boys at MPW Performance & Race Fab just finished off might be right up your alley.

Using a standard 6.0-litre factory LS with a Harrop 2300 supercharger on top running a cool 9lb of boost and a factory computer, Daryl’s sleeper-spec steelie-wearing Calais punched out just a tickle over 570rwhp on the dyno – similar rear-wheel figures to what we’d expect to see out of a GTS-R W1.

Other mods include one of MPW’s custom-grind camshafts, bigger injectors and a Corvette ZR1 fuel pump. The standard six-speed auto has also been swapped out for a stronger TH400 with a high-stall converter. Those American highway patrol-spec steelies also wear semi-slick rear rubber.
