MAD Mike Whiddett put on an epic display of car control at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on the weekend.

The event is basically a prestigious hoon-fest held on the immaculate gardens surrounding an old castle owned by Lord March, who hosts the event each year.

The property even has its own hillclimb course, which plays host to some of the world’s rarest, fastest and maddest machinery. It’s seen the demise of some pretty serious cars, due to the narrowness of the course and drivers being unable to pre-heat tyres and brakes. An incredibly rare Mazda 787B Le Mans endurance racer was crunched over the weekend, and Ken Block came close to stuffing his famous ‘Hoonicorn’ Mustang into the tyre barrier – with big boss Lord March in the passenger seat!

Drift sensation Mad Mike also tore up the Goodwood hill with his four-rotor Mazda RX-7 in a cloud of tyre-smoke, taking every corner with an armful of opposite lock.

The RX-7 packs a Pulse Performance Race Engineering 26b quad-rotor engine, with a hand-built chrome-moly crankshaft, 55mm throttlebodies, primary- and secondary-stage injectors and MoTeC fuel rails, and it drinks through a Bosch 440 EFI system.

It puts 534hp through the rear 265/35R18 Nitto tyres, and rides on TEIN Super Drift suspension with electronic damping-force control shocks. Custom steering arms, tie rods and rear toe arms allow for maximum drift angle once the hydraulic handbrake is pulled.
