WHEN it comes to howling sixes, nothing beats the sound of a Toyota 2JZ Supra engine. It’s just unusual to hear it coming from a VL Commodore wagon.

Andy and Danny from Spot On Performance in Queensland are the guys behind this automotive culture clash. On the outside it looks like a very neat VL Calais wagon, but when that boost comes on and the engine begins to sing you get the indication that this thing might be hiding its true potential.

“We’ve just given it a bit of a makeover,” Andy Coles says. “It’s gone 8.30@165mph, but that was on a 10.5in slick. We’re expecting that it will run a seven on a 275 radial this weekend at Jamboree.”

Yep, you heard that right! Seven seconds over the standing quarter!

The built 2JZ sports a massive GTX45 turbo and runs on methanol, so you probably won’t see it cruising to the shops anytime soon. The boys have just made the switch to a Holley Dominator EFI system with a datalogger, and they reckon it’s the best thing they’ve ever done.

“We’ve only done a few passes with the new set-up and we’re already making big gains,” Andy says. “It was like we were in the Stone Age before. We were trying to film boost gauges with GoPros and stuff, but now all the information is right there. It’s like a brand new car – it’s the best shape the car has ever been in.”

The guys got a few killer passes in at the APSA meeting in Benaraby last weekend, and even though it was only running eighth-mile in X275, they got some good data in preparation for Jamboree at Willowbank Raceway this weekend.
