Day two of Rockynats 2023 delivered a whole host of high horsepower shenanigans. Saturday was in full send as hundreds of competitors rumbled into the CBD, signaling the start of the street drags at 9am.

On the other side of the Fitzroy River, the burnout precinct came to life as more than 100 drivers took to frying their tyres. The first round of qualifying started at 10am with the open class first to hit the pad, followed by the Pro division.

Twenty of the heavy hitters battled it out for a spot in tomorrow’s finals and their chance to compete at Street Machine Summernats 26. With two Burnout Masters tickets and one Wildcard Shootout entry up for grabs, the competition is fierce.

The river was a perfectly picturesque backdrop to the massive display of the show ‘n’ shine cars that stretched along Quay Street and overflowed into surrounding roads. Blown drag cars, the 4×4 zone and a slew of modified metal formed the path to the drift demonstrations, where onlookers lined the fences to watch the daring display of speed and skill.

Back at the showgrounds, eager-eyed enthusiasts wandered through the elite hall to admire the high-end builds and the freshly debuted unveil cars. An afternoon highlight came in the form of pure horsepower as Jayden Grey shattered dyno records when he made an eye-watering 1686hp on the Insane Performance Dyno in his Camaro NASTI 1. The grounds also hosted pro-wrestling demonstrations and the Hot Wheels stunt show from 5pm.

As the sun fell down the monsters came out and attention turned back to the burnout pad, where the second round of qualifying ran into the night.

Kyle Douglas laid thick clouds of smoke in his crown favourite, LUXIFER, earning himself a spot in Sunday’s finals.

Jay Chun-Tie tipped in hard and fast in TINYTOWING, smoking out onlookers as he flew across the pad.

Wal Gersekowski had 1TUFHG screaming as he flew down the entry chute. After obliterating the tyres Wal needed a hand getting off the pad, although points were deducted his impressive skid still scored him a spot in the finals.

Easter Sunday will be celebrated with the Road to Rockynats Champion events rolling into action from 9am. Drag racing, the dyno comp and burnout events will continue throughout the day until the finals take place early afternoon.
