CAR commercials in Australia are nothing like what they use to be – remember the AU XR8 ute racing a land speed car while being “stuck in third”? You’d struggle to get anything that entertaining on our screens nowadays, with the fun police raining down on anything mildly exciting, so we have to look to the Americans to bring some spark back to the world of car advertising.
This example isn’t actually a car ad though, but rather a new grocery pick-up commercial from the US supermarket chain Walmart. The new ad was launched during last night’s Golden Globe Awards telecast, with at least half-a-dozen TV and movie cars all racing towards a Walmart in their own comical and unique way.
The line-up includes Lightning McQueen from Cars, Doc’s DeLorean from the Back To The Future trilogy, Transformers character Bumblebee in VW Beetle guise, Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, KITT the talking Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider, the Wagon Queen Family Truckster from National Lampoon’s Vacation, the Mystery Machine van from Scooby Doo, Fred Flinstone’s car, and a Ford Explorer from the original Jurassic Park movies.
There’s also a cheeky reference to Walmart founder Sam Walton, featuring his red-and-white F150 in the back end of the video.
