MOVIE star Burt Reynolds passed away earlier this month at the age of 82. For petrolheads growing up in the 70s and 80s, Burt was a legend, the face of several classic car films of the era: White Lightning, Gator, Cannonball Run, and especially the Smokey & The Bandit movies. With cool cars, wicked stunts and Burt always in the bad-arse lead role, these films had everything a young car enthusiast could ask for. As you’d imagine, being involved in some of the coolest car movies of the muscle car golden era came with its perks. Burt owned a bunch of interesting rides, and three cars he owned in his final years are being auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas this weekend.
The first car is a 1987 Chevy Crew Cab Dually pick-up, which is similar to the truck used in 1981’s Cannonball Run. It was originally powered by a carburetted 454 big-block; however, it has been restored with a fuel-injected 496, 4L80E gearbox and air con.
Pontiac Firebirds featured in several Burt films, and this red ’78 Firebird Formula owned by the actor will also be auctioned off this weekend. It’s a tribute to the rocket-powered Pontiac that featured in 1978’s Hooper.
Hardcore fans may remember in 2016 when Barrett-Jackson auctioned off a Firebird from Smokey & The Bandit and the car sold for a massive $550,000. This weekend a similar car owned by Burt will go under the hammer. The 1978 Bandit Edition Trans Am is a recreation owned and built by Burt and comes complete with Hurst-edition T-tops, police scanner and more. It's an exact replica of the car seen in the movies.
All three cars will be auctioned off in Las Vegas this weekend.
