Gaming hardware and software giant Nvidia is partnering with the Hyundai Motor Group, BYD and Polestar to bring its GeForce Now cloud gaming service into cars.

The GeForce Now client for cars can run on any Android- or browser-based infotainment system and rear screens, though gaming controllers are required to play.

It allows users to play desktop-level games, regardless of hardware capabilities, by streaming from high-powered computer servers.

The three automakers are already part of the Nvidia Drive platform that covers infotainment hardware, autonomous driving systems, and artificial intelligence.

GeForce Now is currently available on Windows, Mac, Android smartphones, Android TV, Google Chrome and Safari web browsers with more than 1500 playable titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Genshin Impact and Fortnite.

A subscription fee is required and games need to be purchased separately.

The announcement from the company, best known for its computer graphics cards, coincides with the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but no release date nor compatible models have yet been disclosed.

Tesla’s electric vehicles have been able to play light arcade games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Chess and Beach Buggy Racing on its large touchscreens since 2019.

The American carmaker added beta support for the Steam gaming store client with an over-the-air software update last month, but is limited to Steam Deck-approved games and only available the facelifted Model S sedan and Model X SUV (which aren’t not sold in Australia yet).

Meanwhile, Audi showed-off a near production-ready A6 E-Tron concept electric car last year that can project a video game onto walls using matrix LED headlights.
