TAG Heuer has marked the 50th anniversary of its motorsport-inspired Monza watch with a new limited-edition chronograph, revealed ahead of the 2026 Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Limited to 500 individually numbered examples, the TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph combines styling references to the original 1976 model with the carbon construction and mechanical specification of the modern Monza introduced in 2023.

The Monza’s origins are closely connected with Ferrari and Formula 1. Heuer became the official timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari in 1971, beginning a partnership that coincided with the Italian team’s return to the front of the championship.

Niki Lauda won the 1975 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship for Ferrari, ending an 11-year wait for another drivers’ title. Heuer subsequently introduced the Monza chronograph in 1976 to commemorate the achievement, naming it after the Italian circuit synonymous with Ferrari.

The 50th-anniversary version uses a 42mm cushion-shaped case and fixed bezel made from forged carbon. The material reduces weight and produces a marbled finish that varies slightly between individual watches.

Its matte-black dial incorporates several cues from the 1976 Monza, including red highlights, while white Super-LumiNova is used for the hour markers and hands.

The chronograph minute counter is positioned at three o’clock, with permanent seconds at six and an angled date display at nine. A red central hand provides the main chronograph display.

Around the dial is a black flange carrying both tachymeter and pulsometer scales, features traditionally associated with measuring speed and heart rate respectively.

Inside is TAG Heuer’s COSC-certified TH20-12 automatic movement. Its flyback chronograph function allows the wearer to reset and immediately restart the stopwatch with a single operation rather than stopping, resetting and restarting it separately – a feature with obvious historical relevance to motorsport timing.

The movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback, which also carries the individual XXX/500 edition number.

Other details include a domed, double anti-reflective sapphire crystal, carbon crown, black DLC-coated pushers and a black DLC titanium caseback.

Water resistance is rated at 100 metres, while the Monza is supplied with a perforated black calfskin strap featuring contrasting red stitching and a titanium folding clasp.
