BYD has officially launched the second-generation Seagull electric hatchback in China, providing our clearest look yet at what could become the next Atto 1 in Australia. Unveiled at the Zhengzhou International Circuit on October 20, the new Seagull has gone on sale in its home market priced from 65,900 yuan (approximately A$14,000 at current exchange rates), making it cheaper than its predecessor despite a raft of significant upgrades.
As previously reported by WhichCar, the new model has grown substantially in size, measuring 4205mm long, 1810mm wide and 1570mm tall, with a 2650mm wheelbase. That’s 425mm longer than the outgoing Chinese-market Seagull, bringing it closer to the larger BYD Dolphin and allowing for a five-seat configuration instead of four.

The biggest mechanical change is a switch from front- to rear-wheel drive, and a new independent multi-link rear suspension setup. Two electric motors are available, producing 85kW and 95kW respectively, compared with 55kW in the outgoing Chinese model. For context, Australia’s current Atto 1 produces 65kW in entry-level Essential form and 115kW in the upper-spec Premium.
The new Seagull also introduces BYD’s second-generation ‘Blade Battery’ technology, with 30.1kWh and 39.2kWh batteries with claimed driving ranges of up to 320km and 420km respectively using China’s more generous CLTC testing cycle. Higher-spec models also gain BYD’s Flash Charging tech, which can reportedly charge the battery from 10 to 70 per cent in as little as five minutes.
Inside, the new cabin features a 15.6-inch touchscreen and available equipment includes heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, a massaging driver’s seat and ambient lighting. There’s also an optional LiDAR-based driver assistance system, while practicality improves with a new 94-litre front boot and up to 1380 litres of rear cargo space with the rear seats folded.
Despite the significant upgrades, an Australian introduction remains unconfirmed. Given its recent introduction, the second-generation model may still be some time away from Australian showrooms, but its Chinese launch may provide an early indication of what’s coming next.
