With 552kW from its 6.5-litre V12 the Lamborghini Aventador earns its place at the top with muscle. But for our other contenders, it isn't just about power.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR LP750-4 SUPERVELOCE

362kW/tonne. With 552kW from its 6.5-litre V12 the LP 750-4 earns its place at the top with muscle, upping the ante from 515kW in the regular (and heavier) Aventador.

McLAREN 650S COUPE

Mclaren -650s-359kW/tonne. It’s about lack of weight rather than outright power with the 650S. At just 1330kg, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 (the only turbo in this list) can hit hard. Racier 675LT version raises the bar.

FERRARI 458 SPECIALE

Ferrari -Stradale-331kW/tonne. Last of the atmo Ferrari V8s still delivers thanks to 441 purebred kilowatts, especially mated to the stripped-out Speciale body. Coming 488 ups the ratio to 341kW/tonne.

FERRARI F12

Ferrari -F12-327kW/tonne. Ferrari’s most powerful model musters 541kW from its screaming 6.3-litre V12. Now, where’s that autobahn…

LAMBORGHINI HURACAN

Lamborghini -Huracan-305kW/tonne. What it lacks in punch (okay, we’re being cruel, because there’s still 449kW to play with) the 5.2-litre V10 makes up for with its 1474kg kerb weight.
