New for 2023 is the standard fitment of lane-keep assist and a wireless phone charger, while the Cargo and Crewvan now support cyclist, pedestrian and junction-turning detection for the autonomous emergency braking system.

Further changes include chrome trim on the side doors and tailgate for the Caddy Life seven-seat people mover, and pop-out side windows for the Caddy Life, Caddy Crewvan and Caddy California (with up to 40mm of movement).

Due to the semiconductor chip shortage, Volkswagen Australia notes the Caddy Cargo will be “temporarily” unavailable with the optional automatic park assist or 10-inch infotainment system with built-in satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Engine and drivetrain

Opening the Caddy range is the TSI220, which features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine with 84kW and 220Nm, available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch ‘DSG’ automatic transmission powering the front wheels.

A choice of two 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines are offered across the Caddy range, although the lower-spec TDI280 only features in the Cargo variants, making 75kW of power and 280Nm of torque with power being sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Also available in Cargo guise but standard across the passenger variants of the Caddy, the TDI320 engine puts out an improved 90kW and 320Nm, mated exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
