AU $300K asked for Group B mid-engined Pug hatchback

Group B rally fans have the chance to wrap driving gloves around a Peugeot 205 T16 now available for sale in the UK – after a small moment parting with £175,000 (AU $300K).

One of 200 homologation specials produced, the mid-engined 1.8-litre four-cylinder 205 Turbo 16 also scored a front/rear adjustable all-wheel-drive system and a five-speed manual transmission together capable of a claimed 6.0-second 0-100km/h.

Peugeot 205 T16 rearThe grey example for sale – complete with widened wheelarches and tracks, clamshell rear bonnet and squared-off air scoops – started its life gently as an Italian press car before crossing the channel only last year, and it remains with only 12,266km on the clock.

Advertised on the MarkDonaldson website, the 205 T16 is described as being in “lovely condition” and “accompanied by an original owners’ handbook.”

Peugeot 205 T16 sideThe 205 T16 produced 147kW and used four-wheel independent suspension, versus the sub-100kW (market dependent) and rear torsion bar arrangement of the regular front-engined front-drive 1.6- and 1.9-litre naturally aspirated 205 GTI.

Peugeot pinched both the 1985 and 1986 Group B rally championships with the proper racing version driven by Timo Salonen and Juha Kankkunen.

Peugeot 205 T16 interiorLikely the world’s most expensive Pug and potentially one of the priciest French cars, this 205 T16 arrives on the market only one week on after a low-kilometre 1989-built 205 GTI sold at a British auction for AU $53K.
