BYD has confirmed Australian pricing for its new M9 plug-in hybrid people mover, with the range starting from $61,990 before on-road costs.

The M9 will initially arrive in flagship seven-seat Premium form, priced at $72,990 plus on-road costs, with deliveries expected to begin in the coming months. The cheaper eight-seat Dynamic will follow later.

Both versions are front-wheel drive and use BYD’s DM-i 5.0 plug-in hybrid system, combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor.

Battery capacity differs between grades. The Dynamic receives a 20.39kWh Blade Battery, while the Premium steps up to 36.60kWh. The latter has a claimed electric-only range of up to 145km and combined petrol-electric range of up to 850km under the WLTP test cycle.

Both versions support AC and DC charging and include Vehicle-to-Load functionality for powering external electrical equipment.

Measuring 5145mm long, 1970mm wide and 1805mm high, with a 3045mm wheelbase, the M9 is pitched as a large family and fleet vehicle. Boot capacity is rated at 470 litres with all seats in use, while braked towing capacity is 1500kg.

The seven-seat Premium uses second-row captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation and a near-zero-gravity seating position. Heated and ventilated front seats are also standard on the flagship model.

Cabin technology includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 15.6-inch central touchscreen, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air software updates and four-zone voice control.

An unusual inclusion is an integrated refrigerator and hotbox, capable of cooling contents between -6 and 6 degrees Celsius or heating them between 35 and 50 degrees.

Safety equipment includes up to nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, five millimetre-wave radars and eight ultrasonic sensors supporting the M9’s suite of driver-assistance systems. A Sentry Mode can also monitor the vehicle for potential interference while parked.

The M9 becomes BYD’s seventh new Australian model introduced within 12 months, continuing the Chinese manufacturer’s rapid expansion into new vehicle segments.

Final specifications and timing for the Dynamic are expected closer to its Australian arrival.
