Have you finally admitted that you can’t keep up with the tsunami of new makes and the proliferation of models they offer? Then hold on, because life isn’t getting any simpler.

GWM recently pulled the wraps off its next Haval mid-sized SUV, which should arrive in the first quarter of next year and will – along with a new, even bigger Ora SUV – take the family’s mid-sized SUV count to five.

Although available with multiple drivelines and all-wheel drive in some markets, the angular-looking Jolion Max will arrive here in PHEV or BEV form and front-wheel drive only.

Pricing remains a secret, but the smart money suggests the Jolion Max might slide between the current Jolion Hybrid and Haval H6, with a mid-$30,000 to mid-$40,000 sticker.

An enlarged Ora 5 is expected to follow in the second quarter.

According to GWM Australia’s head of marketing and communications, Steve Maciver, the mid-sized SUV market is precisely where the action is and simply can’t be underestimated.

But GWM isn’t putting all its eggs in the electrification basket.

Its new three-litre turbo-diesel engine option for the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha dual-cab ute is defying conventional wisdom, despite diesel costing close to $3 a litre.

Maciver told Wheels that although a big diesel is “not for everyone”, the engine was selling strongly.

In October, Cannon Alpha sales were split 50/50 between hybrid and diesel, while the diesel Tank 500 outsold its hybrid counterpart 70/30.

“And the diesel is not stealing sales from the hybrid, so it’s an incremental gain,” Maciver said. “We’re super happy with it and, to be honest, we knew we were on to something special with this engine.”

Meanwhile, GWM’s Australian family is about to get another member. And it’ll be the boss.

“We’re going to see Wey launch soon,” Maciver revealed at the recent Haval H7 launch.

Interestingly for a flagship brand, Wey will arrive first as a people mover.

Dubbed the G9X (above), the multi-seater will be the icebreaker for the Wey badge, followed by at least a couple of SUV models.

Launch timing remains secret squirrel, but Wey will take GWM’s Australian family to five franchises.
