Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is Australia's most popular sports car, a muscle car coupe or convertible that's also one of the world's most iconic cars.

Introduced to Australia in its current form in 2016, though with patchy previous availability locally, the Ford Mustang has been around since 1964.

The Ford Mustang is available in Australia with two main variants, both available as a coupe or convertible, and with an automatic or manual gearbox.

The most popular is the Ford Mustang GT, with a 5.0-litre V8 (from just below $64,000), though Ford's four-cylinder turbocharged Mustang 2.3L High Performance variant (starting from a little over $51,000) isn't to be overlooked.

Ford Australia also recently introduced a supercharged V8 variant of the Mustang, priced at just below $100,000, called the Ford Mustang R-Spec after a badge previously used for the Ford Falcon.

The Ford Mustang reigns relatively unchallenged in its performance car price bracket, though the Chevrolet Camaro SS is priced closely enough to convince some, while the four-door Chrysler 300 SRT is another relatively inexpensive way into a V8. Cars like the Toyota Supra or Nissan 370Z provide, albeit less 'muscular' coupes below the $100,000 mark, especially the latter at around $50,000.

How many Ford Mustangs have been built?

In 2018, Ford surpassed the 10 millionth Ford Mustang ever built, though a couple of hundred thousand more have certainly been built since then, as of mid-2020.

What was the first Ford Mustang?

The first Ford Mustang from the Dearborn factory was a Wimbledon white convertible, VIN number 5F08F100001, which was sold three days before the official launch of the car in April 1964.

Is the Ford Mustang a four-seater?

The Ford Mustang has four seats, though there's not a lot of legroom for adults, and the rear passenger safety in a crash has been criticised by ANCAP.

Where is the Ford Mustang built?

Ford Mustangs are built at the company's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, in the United States. It is also produced in right-hand drive from the factory for markets like Australia.
