Aston Martin reveals more technical details of AM-RB 001

A Cosworth designed and built 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 will be the car’s beating heart

ASTON MARTIN today announced the technical partners who will help build the highly anticipated AM-RB 001 hypercar, and in the process revealed new details of the project.

The car is being built in conjunction with the Red Bull Racing Formula One team (represented by the RB in the name), and is expected to rival an LMP1 car for speed in track-only spec.

What we already knew is that the car would be powered by an atmo V12, and have a 1bhp per kilo power-to-weight ratio.

It has been revealed Cosworth will design and build a bespoke 6.5-litre V12 for the car, which will be accompanied by a hybrid battery system from Rimac. The Croatian company’s Concept One road car has earned a reputation for decimating hypercars like the Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari LaFerrari in drag races.

2017-AM-RB-001-front -sideAston Martin describes the high-revving V12 as ‘the ultimate road-legal internal combustion engine’, something the folks at Mercedes-AMG would like have something to say about once they complete their Project One hypercar, which will be powered by the 1.6-litre turbo V6 from an F1 car.

Power will be delivered via a bespoke 7-speed paddle-shift transmission, designed and manufactured by Ricardo Engineering. The unit will be built to specifications set out by Red Bull Advanced Technologies, and F1 technical mastermind Adrian Newey.

2017-AM-RB-001-rearThe car’s chassis, which will be paramount for keeping weight at a minimum, will be produced by Multimac. The company specialises in working with composites, and have a long-standing relationship with Aston Martin through partnerships such as the One-77 and Vulcan.

Alcon and Surface Transforms will take care of the car’s braking system, supplying high performance brake callipers and carbon discs to the project.

The ECU, traction control, and ESP will all be developed by electronic experts Bosch, while UK light manufacturer Wipac will take care of the headlights and taillights.

Only 150 road-going AM-RB 001s will be built, with an additional 25 track-only versions. Aston Martin says first deliveries are due in 2019.
