The Bronco Basecamp will be on sale in Australia in the second half of next year with an estimated WLTP driving range of up to 900km, Ford has revealed, as the upcoming hybrid SUV is pictured on Aussie soil for the first time.

Ford has also confirmed that the Bronco will run a 49kWh battery feeding dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, paired with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. It’s a range-extender electric vehicle (REEV), meaning the ICE engine never drives the wheels and instead can only charge the battery.

The set-up combines to deliver 800 to 900km of WLTP range, Ford said in a statement as it teamed the Bronco Basecamp with long-distance athlete and motivational speaker Nedd Brockman (pictured above) in a publicity drive staged in the NSW bush.

While it might seem like an odd pairing at first, Ford says the connection “captures the simplicity of heading outdoors without knowing exactly what you might find”, which highlights the “sense of discovery that sits at the heart of the Bronco Basecamp”.

Although local pricing, full specs and availability will only be confirmed closer to its debut down under, we do know that the Bronco Outer Banks version will have flat-folding front and rear seats that allow the interior to be converted into a sleeping space, with an inflatable insert smoothing out the area and acting as a kind of mattress.

It will also have vehicle-to-load functionality so the battery can be used to power camping gear, tools and the like, a fold-out benchtop/table in the tailgate that can act as a handy “Wild Kitchen” accessory, plus a 7.5-litre fridge in the centre console. 

The Bronco is Ford’s second attempt at getting a hybrid SUV to work down under. The Ford Escape, which was smaller than the Basecamp and was a petrol-hybrid rather than a range-extender, was discontinued in 2023.
