The 2027 Hyundai Tucson hybrid may launch with improved performance compared to the model it replaces, bucking the trend seen in key rivals that have debuted with lower outputs.

The upcoming hybrid SUV will feature a revised version of the 1.6-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder hybrid powertrain used in the current model, but with higher combined outputs. Motor1 reveals that the new model will produce 180kW and 380Nm.

That’s an increase of 8kW and 13Nm over the current generation, and while that’s only a small jump, it’s a notable improvement over the rival Toyota RAV4 hybrid, which produces 143kW and dropped 20kW in the switch from the previous-generation model.

The Hyundai’s acceleration improves as a result, with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.5 seconds, down 0.3 sec compared to the outgoing model. Fuel consumption, based on Korean testing, is rated at 5.7L/100km, which is an improvement over the 6.2L/100km of the current-gen model, despite the 2027 version being larger overall.

Australian testing rates the current Tucson at 4.9L/100km for 2WD models, and up to 5.3L/100km with AWD. If the same improvement were applied locally, official consumption could sit as low as 4.5L/100km and 4.9L/100km respectively.

While the news is good for the Tucson hybrid, the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol model without hybrid assistance looks set to follow the broader segment trend of reduced outputs, likely as a result of stricter emissions controls.

Korean specs for that model indicate 132kW and 217Nm in the new generation. While that variant has been removed from the Australian Tucson range, it produced the same 132kW but a higher 265Nm when last sold here.

Mazda made a similar move with its new-generation CX-5, which launched in 2026 with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 132kW and 242Nm, down 8kW and 10Nm compared to its predecessor.

The future model lineup for the Tucson in Australia has yet to be announced, but it’s possible Hyundai could switch to an all-hybrid lineup that includes a plug-in hybrid for the first time, matching that of the RAV4. The new model should arrive in Australia in early 2027, with more details about local specifications expected closer to launch.
