One of the highlights of MG’s stand at Sydney’s Everything Electric show was the chance to get hands-on with the brand’s all-new U9 EV ute. You can look at photos and videos of a vehicle for days on end but still be surprised when you see it in the flesh, and that was the case when WhichCar by Wheels had a look under the bonnet.
For all its impressive looks, build quality, gear and all-electric drivetrain, the feature that stuck out was the gaping luggage compartment in the frunk. A quick look at the specs list will tell you it comes in at a giant 236 litres, but that’s a bit of an abstract number until you’re standing in front of it.

We’re fond of saying that the rear row of an SUV can accommodate a tallish grown adult when we review cars, and now we can apply the same term to that storage space. Of EVs sold in Australia, only the Ford F-150 Lightning – which, unlike the U9, has to be imported and converted to right-hand drive – can top it.
Couple of suitcases to stow away for a weekend trip? The frunk has you covered. Large suitcases. The type you have to sit on to close because they’re so full.
We weren’t alone in being stopped in our tracks by the frunk, with plenty of attendees also taking the time to have a good look.
Of course, the up-front storage is just one of the highlights of the vehicle, which is making its world debut down under. Price is another, with the U9 going for $78,990 before on-roads.

Crucially for its market segment, it also boasts a WLTP range of 430km, 3500kg braked towing capacity, a payload rated at 685kg, and vehicle-to-load functionality so you can use it to power outdoor gear on a camping trip or power tools while you’re working.
Our time sitting in the cabin brought home the U9’s high levels of trim, and the switchgear fits in with the tough but stylish look of the exterior. A highlight here is the trick gear selector, which looks like something out of the Millennium Falcon.
The U9 is due to go on sale in the last quarter of this year as it tackles rivals like Toyota’s BEV HiLux and the KGM Musso.
