MG Motor has confirmed its new MGU9 EV will be priced from $78,990 before on-road costs, with Australia becoming the first market globally to launch the all-electric ute. It will enter an increasingly electrified market segment with a combination of dual-motor performance, a WLTP range of 430km and 3500kg braked towing capacity with a lengthy list of standard equipment.

Scheduled to arrive locally in the fourth quarter of this year, the U9’s power comes from a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery feeding two electric motors for all-wheel drive. Combined outputs are 325kW and 700Nm, enough to send the MGU9 from 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds.

Its 430km WLTP range is backed by 11kW AC charging and a maximum DC charging rate of 115kW. MG says a 20-80 per cent recharge takes as little as 42 minutes.

Importantly for a ute, the MGU9 can tow up to 3500kg braked, matching the benchmark set by many diesel-powered dual-cab utes. Payload is rated at 685kg, while the absence of a combustion engine frees up space for a sizeable 236-litre front storage compartment.

There’s also vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, offering up to 6.6kW externally and 2.2kW inside the cabin, which MG says is useful for powering camping equipment, tools or appliances away from the grid.

Rather than positioning the MGU9 as a traditional workhorse, MG is pitching its first electric ute as a lifestyle vehicle, reflecting the increasingly family-focused role dual cabs play in Australia. That positioning extends to its air suspension, and the cabin is claimed to offer SUV-like levels of comfort.

Standard equipment includes leather front seats, a heated, ventilated and massaging driver’s seat, twin 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15-watt wireless phone charger and eight-speaker JBL audio system.

“The MGU9 EV brings the things people love about a ute – the space, flexibility and ability to get away for the weekend – and the comfort and refinement typically associated with a modern SUV, together with the benefits of a fully electric powertrain,” said MG Motor Australia marketing director Dimitri Andreatidis.

Further local details for the MGU9 EV are expected to be announced closer to its arrival in the fourth quarter of 2026.
