It’s the fastest, most powerful 911 Turbo ever and finally, images and details of the new blown Porsche have been revealed.
So to celebrate, here are nine awesome, juicy details about Porsche’s all-new ‘blown’ monster.
1) More power: The new Turbo S boasts 22kW more, with total output now reaching 412kW
2) More boost: More pressure from its twin turbos + more revs = more fun
3) Bigger everything!Turbo models have used the Carrera 4’s wide body in the past, but this time, the Turbo is even fatter. The new car is 28mm wider and 100mm longer than the previous 997 Turbo, making it the widest 911 in the range. Its wheels are bigger too, with the 991 variant now riding on 20inch rims.
4) Fastest ever: Not only will it accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds (0.2 quicker than the old car) but the 991 Turbo S has lapped the Nurburgring in under 7:30 – more than nine seconds quicker than the outgoing model.
5) It has active aero: A three-stage retractable front splitter adjusts the car’s aero on the move, reducing the Turbo’s tendency to raise its nose at high speed.
6) It has active rear steering:Like the GT3, the Turbo uses active rear steering which moves the rear wheels to improve manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at high speed.
7) Boo! No manual:Again, like the GT3, the Turbo won’t be offered with a manual option – a move sure to disappoint traditionalists.
8) Lid accessories: Want to personalise your Turbo? Its roof can be painted, made of glass or made of carbonfibre.
9) Greater efficiency: Despite its extra grunt, the new Turbo is also 16 percent more fuel efficient.
What do you do if you’re young, bored with Lamborghinis and Ferraris and have way too much money?
Build a $1.5 million road-legal Batmobile of course!
The brainchild of a group of wealthy youngsters aged 21-34, this ‘car’ – called the Tumbler – is a fully functional, life-size replica of the Batmobile driven by Christian Bale in the Dark Knight trilogy.
But don’t think it’s simply a design exercise.
The group, who call themselves Team Galag, intend to rally their Batmobile in the infamous Gumball 300 – a unique 5000km event where the uber rich drive the world’s most expensive cars across Europe.
Built in Florida by Parker Brothers, the Batmobile is powered by a 6.2-litre V8 and can hit up to 160km/h.
Handling isn’t expected to be great, with the vehicle, which boasts the dimensions of a small truck, weighing in at 2.5 tonnes.
But still, we can’t think of a better way to turn heads.
Why so serious?
No, that number in the headline isn’t a typo.
This Subaru BRZ actually has 1044kW – a figure that, if accurate, makes it the most powerful BRZ in the world.
And don’t think it’s running a top fuel V8 drag motor under its bonnet either.
Built by champion American drag racer Ali Afshar, the BRZ actually runs a 2.5-litre boxer engine from a Subaru Impreza STI.
Twin turbos boost the power figure, with Afshar claiming his BRZ is the ‘fastest Subaru on the planet’.
As you’d expect, the rest of the BRZ has been heavily modified to cope with all that extra grunt, with Afshar hoping his car will clock a sub seven second 1/4 mile pass this weekend in Las Vegas.
Crikey.
Ah McLaren, you sure know how to shoot a good photo.
The British Brand’s latest creation, set on a frozen lake in northern Sweden, shows its new P1 hypercar undergoing extreme weather testing.
And by ‘extreme’ testing, it seems McLaren means drifting the 674kW/900Nm hybrid through snow.
But hey, we aren’t complaining.
The first examples of the $2 million P1, which can shoot from 0-300km/h in under 17 seconds, will be delivered to customers in the coming months.
Hyundai has released a highlights video of its dramatic ‘Fluidic Sculpture in Motion’ light sculpture, installed at Milan Design Week earlier this month.
Using 3D scanners, lasers, music, dance, and 12,000 translucent spheres, the dynamic sculpture registers body heat, to allow visitors to interact with the work, and create light shapes using gestures.
According to Suk-Geun Oh, head of Hyundai’s Design Centre where the installation was created, “The light sculpture introduces Hyundai’s aesthetic language to audiences in the form of interactive performance art. It is inspired by the formation and transformation of the natural world.”
Mr Oh adds, “Hyundai designers pay tribute to the aesthetics of nature’s free-flowing beauty to build cars that are more than just products, with refinement and values of an artist creating a work of art.”
The two alleged ‘Boston bombers’, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, were tracked by police using a two-way, satellite system known as ‘mbrace’, fitted to the Mercedes-Benz SUV car-jacked by the brothers on the night of the Boston Marathon attacks.
According to the ‘Boston Globe’, having shot a police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the pair car-jacked a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 in the nearby suburb of Cambridge, taking its owner on terrifying, 90-minute ride at gun-point around the city.
The car’s owner, referred to only as ‘Danny’, says the pair openly discussed driving to New York, where it’s thought they intended to carry out further bombings.
Amazingly, Danny escaped at a petrol station, and told police his car was equipped with the Mercedes ‘mbrace’ system; featuring among other functions, remote car control and navigation applications.
Connected to the car via smartphone, the system led police to the waterfront location where an end-game gunfight played out.
According to Mercedes-Benz, mbrace is not currently available in Australia.
Welcome everyone to the insanely expensive world of supercar merchandise.
A glittering wonderland where car makers add zeros to the prices of everyday goods.
All because they stick their badges on them.
To celebrate this lunacy, we’ve collected some of the more…astronomical asking prices in one convenient spot for your viewing pleasure.
Oh, and it’s timely too, with Ferrari and Hublot releasing a new ‘special edition’ watch (pictured).
Designed to accompany the release of the $2.3 million LaFerarri, the watch – called the Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari – has 637 moving parts and needs to be wound every month.
Sadly, Hublot is yet to list the watch’s cost, but if the LaFerrari’s $2.3 million tag is out of your range, we’re guessing the watch will be too.
Still it’s worth clicking through the gallery, for a laugh if nothing else.
The close of this year’s Shanghai and New York motor shows marks the end of the car show ‘season’, so MOTOR magazine has put together a gallery of its 10 all-time favourite concept cars.
Concepts allow a car maker to show its skills, test future ideas (in public), preview up-coming models, let design teams ‘off the chain’, and create extra buzz around its production models.
BMW’s new M4 has been caught testing at the Nurburgring, with these images giving us the best look yet at the new performance coupe.
The images clearly show how the new model, which is to be revealed later this year, is beginning to take shape, with two BMW engineers taking the car to its limit.
Based on the new 4 Series coupe, the M4 gets more aggressive styling, with front design cues taken from the M6.
Under the bonnet, the M4 is tipped to use a twin-turbo straight six that will produce around 335kW.
The new Porsche Cayman is mega.
In fact, we reckon it’s almost as good as the iconic 911.
But that hasn’t stopped German tuner TechArt trying to make it even better.
A new, aerodynamically-tuned body kit alters the Cayman’s appearance, with new wheels and a 35mm lower ride height creating a more muscular stance.
Underneath, the Cayman gets a new sports exhaust system and new splitters front and rear, while the interior also gets a onceover with different trims, paddle shifters and a new three-spoke ‘sports’ steering wheel.
We approve.
