TOYOTA’s 12th-generation Corolla hatchback is the big T’s most compelling small car in years, and now its sedan counterpart is preparing to launch in Oz. We’ve got high hopes for it, and spent a few moments getting acquainted with a left-hand-drive version during a sneak peek in California, around the time of its reveal at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China.

Some of the hatchback’s striking design features carry over, including its sharp headlights and broad stance with its lowered roofline, but Toyota has worked hard to distinguish the booted three-box sedan overall from its trendsetting sibling.
In profile the Corolla sedan has attractive proportions and fresh surfaces with a single rising shoulder line on either side extending from the front wheel-arch to the taillight. A huge grille dominates the front end of the car in these pictures, though a second nose treatment is to be made available in the United States, and may also make its way here.
More information about drivetrains and trim specifications will be made available closer to the Corolla sedan’s local launch, which is slated for this time next year.
