New details about BYD’s upcoming Denza N9 extra-large SUV have been unveiled in regulatory filings in China, revealing that the six-seat BEV will pack an immense 890kW of grunt – which will be needed to haul its kerb weight of 3180kg around town.

The model, which has overcome a major hurdle for local sale after winning approval under Australian Design Rules in PHEV, was reportedly spotted being tested in right-hand drive down under back in June, so the battery-only version should be a chance of following suit.

Filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), have revealed the N9 will run a tri-motor all-wheel drive system producing 890kW and a claimed top speed of 240km/h. That power puts it above Denza’s Z9GT ultra-luxury, high-performance grand tourer.

Its size will certainly turn heads if it does make it to Aussie roads. At 5270mm long, 2030mm wide and 1830mm tall with a 3125mm wheelbase, it is even larger than Denza’s B8 SUV, the brand’s current flagship.

The three e-motors work independently, with the front making 270kW and the two rears delivering 310kW each, and there’s a separate rear-wheel steering system, according to CarNews China.

BYD’s filings also include functions like compass U-turn, which allows the vehicle to rotate on its axis to position itself in tight spots. There’s also stability control in the event of a tyre failure at high speed, and rear-steer parking.

Two brake systems have been specified: one from FinDreams, a BYD subsidiary that makes highly integrated brake-by-wire tech, and the other from Bosch and ESP. The N9 also sports roof-mounted LiDAR and a closed front grille.

While the filings detail a five- or six-seat configuration and optional 22-inch forged rims, there’s no information on the N9’s battery capacity, charging capabilities or range.

In PHEV form, the N9 runs a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine good for 152kW and 325Nm, with three electric motors – like the BEV, one at the front, two at the rear – for a combined 680kW and 1035Nm.
