The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been awarded Production Car of the Year in the Car Design Review.

Produced by industry outlet Car Design News, the annual publication awards the best design to both a concept car and a production car – with the judging panel including head designers from Maserati, Volvo, and Volkswagen.

“Once in a while a car comes along that creates an impact on the design community,” said Maserati’s Vice President of Design Klaus Busse.

“The Ioniq 5 is such a car, and its impact is evident in the sketches of many young student designers.”

The Hyundai’s “striking surfaces and geometric patterns” were also highlighted by the judges, with some referring to the Ioniq 5’s design as a “gamechanger”.

The eighth annual Car Design Review also named the Renault 5 as the winner of the concept car category, despite strong competition from both Lexus LF-Z and Polestar Precept.

“Renault 5 Concept shows a beautiful mix between retro design and the modern reincarnation of an iconic car of the past.”

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is on sale in Australia now, priced from $71,900 before on-road costs, while a production version of the Renault 5 is expected in the future.
