Ferrari has expanded its new 849 Testarossa range with a Spider variant that combines the dramatic styling and extreme performance of the coupe with the added appeal of open-air motoring.

Despite losing its fixed roof, the Italian marque says the convertible delivers virtually identical performance and handling to the hard-top, while offering drivers a more immersive experience thanks to a retractable roof and an enhanced V8 soundtrack.

Built as the flagship of Ferrari’s current sports car line-up, the 849 Testarossa Spider is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain producing a combined 772kW and offering around 24 kilometres of electric-only driving. That headline figure comes from a heavily revised 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 611kW, supported by three electric motors contributing a further 161kW.

The hybrid system allows the Ferrari to operate silently in urban areas before unleashing its full performance when the driving conditions allow.

The return of the Testarossa badge marks one of Ferrari’s boldest modern revivals, drawing inspiration from one of the company’s most recognisable nameplates while introducing thoroughly contemporary technology.

Although based on the outgoing SF90 Spider, Ferrari says virtually every aspect of the car has been re-engineered.

The electrically operated hard-top folds away in just 14 seconds and can be opened or closed while travelling at speeds of up to 45km/h. Clever packaging means luggage space is unchanged compared with the coupe.

Aerodynamic improvements have also been a major focus. New ducts positioned behind the headrests channel airflow through the cabin to reduce buffeting, while a retractable rear window allows occupants to enjoy more of the V8’s exhaust note with the roof lowered.

Inside, the Spider retains Ferrari’s driver-focused cockpit, complete with Apple CarPlay integration, digital instrumentation and the brand’s signature shift lights mounted across the steering wheel.

Out on the road, the Testarossa Spider combines astonishing straight-line pace with remarkable composure. The brake-by-wire system delivers immense stopping power and reassuring pedal feel, while sharp steering and exceptional front-end grip inspire confidence through fast corners.

Buyers can also specify Ferrari’s optional Assetto Fiorano package, which adds lighter Multimatic dampers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and other circuit-focused upgrades. For most Australian roads, however, the standard adaptive suspension strikes the better balance between comfort and capability.

With rivals such as the Lamborghini Revuelto yet to offer an open-top version, the Ferrari 849 Testarossa Spider occupies a unique position at the pinnacle of the electrified supercar segment – cutting-edge hybrid technology combined with the unmistakable thrill of a Ferrari convertible.
