Jeep Australia has issued a recall for just under 500 examples of the Grand Cherokee large SUV due to a manufacturing issue.

It is the 17th recall for the previous-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee in Australia, which was sold between 2011 and 2021.

The latest issue affects 485 units built between 2017 and 2019.

According to the recall notice, a manufacturing defect could cause the anti-lock braking system to fail.

"If this occurs, the brake lights may illuminate or allow the vehicle to start and shift out of park without the brake pedal being depressed. This may result in an unintended vehicle movement.

"An unintended movement of the vehicle may increase the risk of an accident causing serious injuries or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users."

Jeep Australia said affected owners should contact a dealership to schedule an appointment to complete the repair, free of charge.

A VIN list for the affected vehicles can be found here.

The company can be contacted directly by calling 1300 133 079, or by visiting a dealership, found here.
