BMW Australia is recalling its X5 plug-in hybrid due to an issue which may cause its battery to short circuit and catch fire when fully charged.
Twenty examples of the MY20 xDrive45e variant are said to be affected.
According to the Department for Infrastructure which issued the notice, due to a manufacturing defect, the battery does not meet specifications and may short circuit when fully charged, which could result in a fire.
Owners are being advised not to charge their vehicles with the cable above 30 per cent and to bring them in for a free repair at a BMW dealership with as little charge as possible.
It’s also advised not to use the manual gearshift mechanism, the sport shift on the selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.
A list of VINs is available here.
BMW can be contacted about the issue on 1800 243 675 or via email [email protected]
