BYD has confirmed its comprehensively updated Atto 3 Evo electric SUV will arrive in Australian showrooms later this year, bringing major mechanical and technological changes to one of the country’s best-selling electric vehicles.

The facelifted model sits on an updated version of BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, introducing an 800-volt electrical architecture, faster charging capabilities and, for the first time, rear-wheel drive.

While local pricing and final specifications have yet to be announced, BYD Australia has opened expressions of interest ahead of the model’s launch. The company says Australian colours, equipment levels and technical specifications will be confirmed closer to its showroom arrival.

One of the biggest changes is beneath the skin. Overseas, the Atto 3 Evo is available with a new rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 230kW and 380Nm, replacing the outgoing front-wheel-drive layout. A flagship dual-motor all-wheel-drive version develops 330kW and 560Nm, although BYD has not confirmed whether both variants will be offered locally.

The upgraded platform also supports DC fast charging at up to 220kW, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent recharge in around 25 minutes under ideal conditions. A larger battery also increases driving range, while revised rear suspension is expected to improve ride comfort and handling.

Styling changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, with redesigned front and rear bumpers, slimmer lighting signatures, new alloy wheel designs and subtle aerodynamic revisions. Inside, the cabin receives a new steering-column-mounted gear selector, an 8.8-inch digital instrument display, BYD’s latest 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen and upgraded software. Boot capacity has also increased, while a front storage compartment has been added for the first time.

The Atto 3 was BYD’s first passenger vehicle launched in Australia and helped establish the Chinese brand as a major player in the local EV market. The Evo update arrives as competition intensifies in the small electric SUV segment, where it faces rivals including the MG S5 EV, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric and Geely EX5.

Australian pricing, model grades and final equipment levels are expected to be announced closer to the Atto 3 Evo’s local launch later this year.
