Lamborghini versus Ferrari: Banderas and Baldwin signed to forthcoming feature film

New film to bring the Italian supercar godfathers’ stoush to the big screen

The idea has been knocking around for a while, but distributor AMBI has confirmed that a biopic of the life and times of Ferruccio Lamborghini is in the works.

Antonio Banderas is set to play Lamborghini, with Alec Baldwin in the role of his nemesis Enzo Ferrari.

Some big name talent has been recruited behind the scenes too, with Michael Radford (“The Merchant of Venice,” “The Postman”) directing the movie from a script by Bobby Moresco (“Crash,” “Million Dollar Baby”).

Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Group first mooted the project in 2015 when they optioned the rights to “Ferruccio Lamborghini. La storia ufficiale”, written by the carmaker’s son Tonino Lamborghini.

Set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie’s working title “Lamborghini – The Legend’ follows the industrialist’s career as a manufacturer of tractors, military vehicles and, ultimately, the designer of some of the world’s most iconic supercars, presiding over Automobili Lamborghini until the late 1970s before his death in 1993.

A colourful character and one of Italy’s richest men, Lamborghini had one car for each day of the week and his love of women, celebrity lifestyle, and getting one over on Il Commendatore, Enzo Ferrari, is the stuff of legend.

With racing biopics like Senna and the dramatized Rush (the story of the Niki Lauda and James Hunt rivalry) having outstripped box-office predictions, perhaps there’s appetite for a motoring-related movie that’s a little more closely rooted to reality than Need for Speed or the Fast and the Furious franchise.
