The latest round of test results from Australia’s independent test body, ANCAP, has resulted in five-star results for the new Mazda CX-5, MG S6 EV, BMW X3, and updated Cupra Formentor range.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5’s five-star score comprises a 90 per cent adult occupant protection rating, 91 per cent child occupant protection score, 93 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and an 87 per cent rating for safety assist systems.

ANCAP’s published result for the CX-5 gives it something of an advantage over its key rival, the Toyota RAV4, which remains untested. A five-star result is a requirement for some fleet purchasers, as well as providing peace of mind to private buyers.

The five-star result for the MG S6 EV breaks down into a 92 per cent adult occupant protection rating, an 87 per cent child occupant protection rating, vulnerable road user protection of 84 per cent, and safety assist systems with an 81 per cent score.

Although only announced as part of this latest assessment block, BMW’s five-star result for the X3 gets backdated to vehicles produced from April 2024 onwards and sold locally from December 2024.

Results for the X3 are comprised of an 88 per cent adult occupant rating, 86 per cent child occupant rating, and scores of 77 per cent and 81 per cent, respectively, for vulnerable road user protection and safety assist systems.

All variants currently available in the CX-5, S6 EV, and X3 lineups are covered by their five-star results.

Cupra’s updated Formentor small SUV has been retested, in line with updates introduced at the end of 2025. Unlike the other vehicles tested, the Formentor has an exception to its five-star finish.

Four-cylinder Formentor models, not equipped with Cupra’s optional Extreme Package, receive a five-star score and 91 per cent adult occupant, 86 per cent child occupant, and 79 per cent vulnerable road user protection ratings, along with a 79 per cent score for safety assist systems.

The limited-numbers Formentor VZ5 and cars fitted with the optional Extreme Package are unrated by ANCAP, owing to the lack of a centre airbag on the sports seats fitted to those models and no specific testing for vehicles equipped with them.

The Cupra Formentor was previously tested in 2021, achieving a five-star result, with the renewed result for the updated model extending the rating’s expiry date to December 2031.
