A classic Holden Monaro valued at around $120,000 has been stolen from a Melbourne home, prompting police to release images of the distinctive Australian coupe in the hope it can be tracked down.

Detectives from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit are investigating the theft, which occurred at a property on Jack William Way in Berwick during August.

According to Victoria Police, an unknown offender or offenders gained access to the property’s garage sometime between 1pm on August 14 and 1.45pm on August 16.

The silver 1972 Holden Monaro was subsequently taken from the garage. Police estimate the classic Holden is worth approximately $120,000. Nobody was inside the home when the burglary occurred.

Police have now released photographs of the Monaro as part of their investigation, hoping members of the public may recognise the vehicle or have information about its whereabouts.

The car is an example of Holden’s HQ-generation Monaro, one of the most recognisable Australian performance coupes of the 1970s. Values for surviving examples have risen substantially as interest in locally manufactured Holden and Ford performance cars has increased.

The theft also highlights the vulnerability of valuable classic vehicles, which generally lack the sophisticated electronic immobilisers and tracking systems fitted to modern cars.

Victoria Police advises owners to consider additional physical security measures and vehicle tracking where appropriate, while warning people not to confront suspected thieves themselves.

Detectives are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the Berwick area around the time of the burglary.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
