  • External portions look similar to SUV sizes
  • Release date will coincide with the original Renault 4's 40th anniversary

A revamp of the Renault 4 nameplate could see the French manufacturer introduce an electric SUV next year.

After first revealing its new, retro-style badge in April this year, the manufacturer said it was going to be releasing a surprise in November and, by all accounts, this seems to be it.

Leaked patents in May showed us the Renault 4 would be returning in SUV guise, although its most recent announcement provides strong cues hinting at the model going all-electric, as part of Renault's wider electric vehicle targets.

Utilising the 4L nameplate, Renault has also collaborated with lifestyle partners TheArsenale, with the latter's logos featuring on the concept.

Curiously, TheArsenale's website says: "Where TheArsenale and Renault are going, they don't need roads" – tying in to the Air4 concept name, but potentially hinting at something more extravagant.

It's likely the Air4 could be underpinned by Renault's new Common Module Family B-segment EV (CMF-BEV) platform, the same architecture upon which the new retro-inspired Renault 5 will be based.

The CMF-BEV platform could see the Air4 powered by a single, 100kW electric motor on the front axle, with driving range expected to sit around 400 kilometres depending on the size of the battery pack.
