Surprisingly, the BMW X1 has been on sale in Australia for more than ten years now, becoming a staple of the luxury small SUV segment.

First offered to customers in 2009, the X1 is now in its second generation, and due for a comprehensive update in the near future. The smallest of BMW’s SUVs, it has sold almost two million units globally.

The cheapest version of the X1 will set you back less than $50,000, however it is the more expensive models that are more popular.

Other luxury small SUV rivals to the X1 include the Audi Q2, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, and Mini Countryman.

Are BMW X1s four-wheel drive?

Currently BMW only offers a single a four-wheel drive version of the BMW X1 in Australia, the flagship xDrive25i. All other Aussie BMW X1s send their power to the front wheels only.
