The issue, affecting 5168 HS PHEV and 'HS Plus EV' plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) sold between 2021 and 2022, relates to a manufacturing defect, which could lead to an internal fire.

According to the recall notice issued by the Department of Infrastructure, the “carpet underlay may be positioned between the nut and the electrical ground stud.”

“If the nut detaches over time due to vibrations whilst driving, it could cause the wiring beneath the floor to overheat and it may result in a fire inside the vehicle.”

The recall notice states: “A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders.”

MG said affected owners should contact their preferred dealership to arrange an inspection of their vehicle, with rectification at no-cost to the owner where required.
