BMW is once again being hit by the semiconductor shortage – this time involving its connectivity system.
According to Automotive News Europe, certain models fitted with BMW’s iDrive infotainment system won’t have access to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, leaving buyers to use the vehicle’s integrated systems for the time being.
This issue has come about thanks to a switch in chip suppliers by BMW to ensure it could keep cars rolling off the production line, although those affected by the loss of Apple and Android functions have been told an over-the-update will be available “by the end of June at the latest”.

While customers from the United States, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and France have reported their vehicles being delivered without the functionality, BMW Australia says it’s not a problem expected to hamper local models.
“Our market is unaffected by this issue,” confirmed a spokesperson for BMW Group Australia.
Late last year, BMW reported it was changing specifications and features on locally-delivered vehicles to ensure production could continue, affecting a wide range of its Australian model line-up.
