Nissan has confirmed orders for its all-new Y63 Patrol will open later this month, with the first examples of the flagship 4×4 to arrive in Aussie showrooms in the first quarter of next year packed with a long list of never-before-seen equipment.

The Patrol has been on roads down under since 1961 and the upcoming model is arriving with a raft of firsts, headlined by a switch away from its iconic V8.

The Y63 drops two cylinders but ups power by six per cent to 317kW, with torque boosted by 25 per cent to 700Nm – an immense 140Nm more than its predecessor. That comes courtesy of the twin-turbo six, which draws on the acclaimed GT-R engine’s DNA to also deliver the torque lower in the rev range, as well as running a scavenger oil pump to ensure everything stays lubricated when the vehicle is put through the most challenging terrain.

That six-pot is mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission, with the combination producing sharper throttle response than the 5.6-litre V8 in the Y62.

Select models in the new range will also get another first in the form of adaptive air suspension, which changes the Patrol’s ride height to suit the conditions as it works hand in hand with Nissan’s Intelligent Dynamic Damping tech.

In addition to rising while off-road to give the driver extra clearance, and better breakover and departure angles, the systems also help with fuel consumption and ride comfort by automatically lowering ride height at speeds above 90kmh, then raising it again once the speedo dips below 70kmh. The Y63 can even drop everything down a notch once it’s put into park so passenger exit, entry, and loading/unloading cargo become less of a hassle.

Some Y63 models also break new ground by tracking the occupants’ temperatures as soon as they enter and adjusting the climate control automatically when the vehicle is started, in what Nissan has branded ‘biometric cooling’.

Other never-before-seen specs on the new Patrol – again, available on selected models – see the inclusion of a massage function for the front pews, with ‘zero-gravity’ seats available front and back. Then there’s a heads-up display that brings key info to the driver, a 12-speaker Klipsch premium audio system with a 600-watt amplifier.

One of the more eye-catching changes to the interior, in yet another first, is the Monolith display, which is included across the range – with some variants coming equipped with dual 14.3-inch screens.
