Almost 13,000 brand-new Toyota and Lexus vehicles will need to return to the dealer to resolve a bug in the front-facing camera system.

The issue – affecting the 2022 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Cross and 2021-22 Lexus NX – could result in the autonomous emergency braking system becoming unresponsive for approximately four seconds.

It is caused by the "programming of the software within the forward recognition camera" when passing stopped or parked vehicles.

Toyota and Lexus said a warning light will illuminate in the instrument cluster before the system reboots itself, with functions restored and operative.

These vehicles are fitted with Toyota's latest-generation 'Safety Sense 3.0' system, which utilises a millimetre-wave radar sensor and a forward recognition camera.

For the Toyota Corolla and Corolla Cross, the issue affects approximately 9100 vehicles produced between July and December 2022.

Approximately 3718 Lexus NXs manufactured between November 2021 and December 2022 are affected.

According to the two brands, a no-cost software update is available to book, with the remedy taking approximately 40 minutes to one hour.

However, additional time could be required depending on the dealer's work schedule.

Toyota Australia can be contacted directly by calling 1800 987 366 between 8am and 6pm on weekdays, or by visiting a dealership, found here.

Toyota and Lexus said vehicles will be reprogrammed for those yet to be delivered to a customer.
