BMW’s M Division is readying a multi-pronged assault on the Australian performance car market, with five new models due to land by the end of the fourth quarter.

Models on the way include xDrive variants of the BMW M3 and M4 Competition, the new M4 Competition Convertible xDrive, and X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition variants of the recently-updated SUVs.

The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible xDrive begins at $176,900 (excl. on-roads) and retains the existing M3 and M4 Competition’s 375kW/650Nm output. It notably trades the preceding F83 M4’s folding metal hardtop for a new panel bow soft-top which yields a 40 per cent weight saving.

Standard equipment includes staggered 19/20-inch M forged wheels, adaptive M suspension, comfort access (keyless entry), laserlight headlights, M Sport seats, carbon fibre interior trim finishes, BMW’s Driving Assistant Professional package, parking assistant plus, Harmon Kardon sound system, metallic paint, full Merino leather upholstery and more.

Further option packages have yet to be publicised and will be available closer to launch.

New xDrive-equipped variants of the potent M3 and M4 Competition are also on the way, boasting a list price of $160,900 for the M3 sedan, and $165,900 for the M4 Coupe.

The addition of all-paw traction drops the potent pair’s 0-100km/h time from 3.9 seconds to a claimed 3.5 seconds. Implementing BMW’s xDrive system to the traditional rear-drivers called for the addition of a double-joint spring strut front axle, revised front axle geometry, a bespoke steering ratio tune and revised oil supply system.

Option packages include M carbon-ceramic brakes ($16,500), M carbon exterior package ($9500), lightweight M carbon bucket seats ($7500), or the full M Carbon Package which combines the aforementioned three packages into one handy $26,000 option box. Factory-option performance tyres are also on offer, with your choice of Michelin’s Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres or Pirelli P Zero Corsas, both asking $2000.

An optional M Driver’s Package increases the top speed of the xDrive M3 and M4 Competitions to 290km/h, and is also available on the M4 Competition Convertible xDrive, raising its top speed to a slightly-less hair-tearing 280km/h. The M Driver’s Package also includes a complimentary voucher to BMW’s Driving Experience Advance 2 course, which can also be used at a number of international venues, as well as local ones.

Along with the slew of new M3 and M4 variants on the way, Australian buyers will also receive the face-lifted (or should we say life-cycle impulsed, BMW?) versions of the popular X3 M and X4 M Competition SUVs.

Headlined by a 50Nm bump in torque and a 3.8-second sprint from 0-100km/h (a 0.3-second improvement), Munich’s pair of heavy-hitters will arrive in the final quarter of 2021 wearing a list price of $160,900 for the X3 M Competition, and $167,900 for the X4 M Competition.

A new Rear Seat Comfort Package is available for both sporty SUVs, with the X4 M gaining sun protection glazing and heated seats for the front and second row ($1400); while the X3 M gains the same features plus reclining second row seats, roller sunblind for the second row and a luggage compartment net ($2000).

A $2000 Executive Package adds steering wheel heating, acoustic glazing and active seat ventilation; and a $1400 Innovations Package adds remote engine start, gesture control and BMW Driver Recorder. Both SUVS can be further optioned with an M Carbon Package, including mirror caps, engine strut brace and, on the X4 M Competition, a carbon rear spoiler.
