Melbourne’s Dutton Garage is currently offering for sale the first HSV W427 ever built.
Finished in Panorama Silver as a nod to the original VL Group A Walky, number ‘001’ here is that very ‘prototype’ which sat on HSV’s stands.
Since then it’s travelled only 300km, its use limited by its lack of a compliance plate, but with that being all that separates it from a production example, we’re told it wouldn’t be hard to have it meet ADRs.
However, such a move would hurt its investment potential. “Personally, you wouldn’t want to register this car; the uniqueness of this car means it should be kept this way,” says Shaun Baker, Dutton Garage’s General Manager.
The W427’s ill-fated production run only adds to its rarity. HSV originally planned to sell 427 units before the Global Financial Crisis cut that to 137.
We’ve recently seen prices for ‘normal’ W427s range from high as $180K to as low as $85K depending on their specific condition and kilometres.
The W427’s original price was $155,500, traditionally a lot to ask for an Australian car, but it had the technology to justify the price.
That dry-sump Corvette lump spun its rear bags with 375kW/620Nm through a (then-new) Tremec 6060 and sturdier limited-slip diff, while an actively managed exhaust system improved its bark.
Meanwhile, Magnetic Ride Control, lower and stiffer suspension tuning, and huge Brembos upgraded the chassis to a similar degree.
Dutton has attached a Price on Application to this specialty, but judging by its provenance and rarity we don’t think us mortgage-paying types could do anything other than window shop.
