THINGS TO KNOW

  • Australia is getting closer to an emissions regulations plan that will further incentivise EVs
  • A national charging network is being built around Australia
  • Family-sized EVs are slowly becoming more affordable

If you're looking to make the leap into an electric car, this is your guide to every EV launching in Australia this year – and beyond.

For now, it's true that most electric options in the new-car market are still markedly more expensive than their conventional combustion-engined counterparts.

Of course, the argument is often made that EVs can reduce longer-term costs through cheaper and potentially free recharging, along with lower maintenance and parts costs.

In fact, we have a story on that topic here, crunching the numbers on the cost of EV ownership versus owning a regular car.

Whatever your perspective...

This evolving article is where you'll find every new EV available in Australia, and all of those on the way.

Indeed, the electric vehicle race has well and truly started in Australia. It had a slow start, with minimal incentives pushing supply towards more EV-friendly regions in recent years.

And that's just what's coming – the article promoted below, Australia's Best Electric Cars for 2023, will tell you which currently available EVs should be at the top of your list.

So, what's coming?

Over 30 new or updated EVs are due in Australia over the next two years – and more are being announced almost weekly.

Traditional carmakers including Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota are paying strong attention to the EV rush, but there are plenty of newcomers – from the now well-established Tesla to the revived MG brand and the increasingly popular BYD, along with GWM, LDV, and many others.

Here's your guide on what to expect in 2023 and beyond.

Audi Q4 E-Tron

64

The Audi Q4 E-Tron mid-size electric SUV is due in Australia in 2024 with a mid-life refresh.

Audi hopes to secure stronger volumes of the Q4 E-Tron in both Sportback and wagon body styles than the trickle of Q8 E-Trons (neé E-Tron SUV) that have arrived locally.

It’s a fair assumption that the Q4 E-Tron will be more popular than Audi’s bigger EVs. It’s keenly priced in its Europe home market, with the new entry-level E-Tron 45 costing the equivalent of AU$88,000 in Germany.

It will compete with the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC, as well as high-end variants of the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5.

Audi Q6 E-Tron

64

Audi’s all-electric mid-size SUV rival to the Tesla Model Y and BMW iX3 is due next year.

Underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s ground-up Premium Platform Electric (PPE), shared with the forthcoming Porsche Macan EV, the Q6 E-Tron rides on an identical 2928mm wheelbase to the existing Q8 E-Tron.

Audi has confirmed it will be available in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations with the Q6 E-Tron 55 accelerating from 0-100km/h in around six seconds, while the high-performance S flagship cuts it to 4.5 seconds.

Inside, the Q6 E-Tron will debut a new look for Audi, with an all-new 14.5-inch central touchscreen with 11.9-inch driver instruments, joined by a curved panel running its new ‘E3 electronics architecture’.

A separate 10.9-inch front passenger display is optional to control audio, view videos and more – but includes a privacy layer to prevent distracting the driver.

BMW will add another five fully electric models to its Australian line-up by early 2024, taking the number of zero-emissions options in its local line-up to 14 – with pure EV options now available in seven model lines.

Critically though, all five additions sneak in under Australia’s luxury car tax threshold, joining the single sub-LCT BMW EV offering currently on sale and totalling four affordable pure EV BMWs now costing less than $89,332.

BMW’s sub-LCT line-up includes the iX1 eDrive20, iX1 xDrive30, iX2 eDrive20, iX2 xDrive30, i4 eDrive35 and iX3 M Sport.

BMW revealed the new i5 in late May, 2023, and confirmed Australian details at the same time. The i5 will reach our shores later this year priced from $155,900 before on-road costs.

When it reaches Australia, the i5 will take on the Mercedes-Benz EQE and electric Genesis 'Electrified G80', and the forthcoming Audi A6 E-Tron.

The eDrive20, like its iX1 donor, has a 65kWh battery and a 150kW/247Nm front electric motor for a 477-kilometre range.

The BMW iX2 xDrive30 also has a 65kWh battery pack, and features the same electric motors front and rear as the iX1 for outputs of 230kW and 494Nm.

Claimed performance is identical at 5.6 seconds for the 0-100km/h benchmark sprint.

BMW quoting a WLTP range of 449km for the iX2 xDrive30. The iX1's WLTP range is a maximum 440km.

BYD is set to release two models alongside its Atto 3 SUV in Australia, with the Dolphin being a small hatchback comparable to the Toyota Yaris.

It is the cheapest electric vehicle on offer in Australia, priced from $38,890 before on-road costs – undercutting the MG 4 by $100.

There are two battery configurations: the base 45kWh producing 70kW/180Nm and the larger 60.5kWh vehicle making 125kW/250Nm.

A more potent, limited-run Dolphin Sport “hot hatch” flagship will arrive in 2024.

Due to follow the E-Transit, Mustang Mach E and E-Transit Custom EVs later in 2024, the Puma EV hasn’t even debuted in Europe yet – but we know it’ll be underpinned by an evolved version of the Ford’s existing Global-B architecture.

It’s believed that the light crossover is being produced in tandem with Europe’s forthcoming small Ford Transit Courier van. Battery and powertrain details will be made public closer to its reveal.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

64

Stiffer, faster, more powerful and engineered to feel like an old-school, petrol-powered performance car: these are the headlines for the first-ever EV produced by Hyundai N.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N packs 478kW and can rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds – putting it in the same league as a Porsche Taycan 4S for power and performance.

The electric powerhouse is due in early 2024 and will cost $111,000 before on-road costs.

64
The brand will no longer pause sales on any Ioniq 5 variant, including the N.

That pricing makes the Ioniq 5 N around $11,000 more expensive than the similarly powerful, but less focused, Kia EV6 GT and a whopping $170,000 less than a Porsche Taycan Turbo, which offers similar performance and was benchmarked by Hyundai during the N’s development.

Hyundai is also keen to note that unlike the first year of sales for the regular Ioniq 5, orders for the N model "will remain open for the foreseeable future". The brand will no longer pause sales on any Ioniq 5 variant, including the N.

The next-generation 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric will arrive in Australia later this year.

The entire range was developed around the battery-electric variant, with design elements taken from the Ioniq range.

Playing flagship, the electric Kona will probably arrive in Australia with similar tweaks to the second-generation Kia Niro, meaning less torque from a single electric motor – now 150kW/255Nm – potentially for improved driving range.

It is related mechanically to the Peugeot E-2008 and the Fiat 600e, with a claimed range of up to 400 kilometres on the combined WLTP test cycle.

While it is exclusively front-wheel drive and not designed for off-roading, Jeep’s first pure EV offers 200mm of ground clearance, a skid plate and the requisite plastic body cladding.

Local pricing and features details will be announced closer to its launch.

The 2024 Kia EV9 rides on the Hyundai-Kia Group's dedicated E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, as found underneath the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60.

It will be heavily related to the Hyundai Ioniq 7, which is also expected to debut later this year.

Buyers can choose from a seven- or six-seat layout, with captain's chairs in the second row for the latter. It rides on a 3100mm wheelbase and has a 5010mm overall length.

The Kia EV9 will be offered in single-motor rear-wheel (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, with the flagship GT-Line AWD offering a 0-100km/h time of 6.0 seconds and a soon-to-be-available torque boost to 700Nm. A more-powerful EV9 GT will follow in 2025.

MG 4 XPower

64

Pricing for the MG 4 XPower has been confirmed, with the 320kW/600Nm all-paw hot hatch commanding $59,990 before on-road costs.

More than matching the rear-drive 170kW Cupra Born's asking price, the XPower's claimed 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint puts it in straight-line competition with the 294kW Audi RS3 ($89,869) and is enough to comfortably eclipse the 4.8-second Volkswagen Golf R ($68,990).

A performance vehicle is about more than outright speed, of course, so MG has taken the regular 4's Modular Scalable Platform underpinnings and stiffened the suspension with firmer dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars.

It also gets a locking differential for its rear-biased (150kW front/170kW rear) twin motor setup.

The MG 4 XPower is due in local showrooms imminently, joining the standard rear-drive models launched in July.

Nissan Australia’s vital all-electric SUV is no closer to Australia, with the Tesla Model Y rival expected later in 2024 – if not 2025.

The Nissan Ariya midsize electric SUV was confirmed for our market back in 2021, but last year, the brand said its launch is held up by demand and Australia’s relaxed fuel efficiency regulations.

Globally, the Ariya offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and two different battery sizes, resulting in four different power outputs, ranging from 160kW to 290kW.

The top-rung Ariya E-Force Performance hits 100km/h in just over five seconds, while the most efficient will nudge 500km of range on a full charge.

The 2024 Peugeot E-208 electric hatch will debut in Australia with a facelift.

It marks the local return of the 208 nameplate since its last appearance in 2018, as Peugeot Australia elected not to sell the current-generation model launched in Europe four years ago – until now.

"As we continue to broaden our electrified offering, the new E-208 will strengthen our range as we re-enter the small hatch market in Australia,” said managing director, Kate Gillis.

While local details – including pricing and launch timing – will be announced “in due course”, Peugeot has confirmed the E-208 will arrive here at some point next year.

It is based on parent company Geely’s all-new Sustainable Experience Architecture electric vehicle platform.

In the United States, it will be priced from approximately US$60,000 (AU$90,000), suggesting a starting price of around $100,000 before on-road costs in Australia.

The Dual Motor Long Range Performance variant is capable of a 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint, with a 400kW and 686Nm maximum power output. All Polestar 4s support 200kW DC fast and 22kW AC home charging.

Renault calls the Megane E-Tech an SUV, though its proportions are closer to hatchback with a relatively low 1500mm roofline and short 4200mm body.

The Megane E-Tech is pitched as a more premium EV than the MG 4 and Cupra Born hatches, and it's very close in price to the Polestar 2 sedan and Tesla Model 3.

Its 440L boot is competitive, and it boasts a respectable 454km WLTP range claim in what is globally a high-spec trim with 20-inch alloy wheels and a 9-inch infotainment system.

Originally intended to arrive sometime in 2023, the Enyaq’s delay has been attributed to the model’s huge success in Europe, with waiting lists of up to 18 months on some variants and Europeans favouring the coupe version.

Skoda Australia also expects the more aerodynamic Enyaq coupe (with a drag coefficient of just 0.234) to be the most popular body style.

According to the brand, every Volkswagen dealer in Australia will retail and service its electric vehicles, including the ID.4 and ID.5, and the ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo.

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the ID.4 medium SUV and its ID.5 coupe SUV twin will arrive here in the second quarter of 2024.

The medium SUVs – similar in size to the Tiguan, and rivals to the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 – were initially targeted to arrive in late 2023.

The confirmation is a long time coming for the local distributor, which has previously criticised the previous Australian Government for its lack of an electric-vehicle strategy.

In November 2022, VW Australia passenger vehicles director Michal Szaniecki said the ID.4 had a “target pricing similar to [Volkswagen’s] most in-demand SUV, the Tiguan 162TSI R-Line,” suggesting a rough starting point of around $58,000 before on-road costs.

Expressions of interest for the electric Volkswagen ID.Buzz van have opened ahead of its December 2024 arrival.

Pricing and features are yet to be confirmed, so for now, VW is aiming to gauge how much buzz there is for the van locally.

Volkswagen will offer several body styles, including a long-wheelbase people mover and a load-lugging cargo carrier, with demand dictating market share.

The final specification for Australia will be locked in closer to its local launch, but expect our cars to have a high level of equipment to reflect demand for top-spec vehicles.

Starting from $59,990, it will become Australia’s most affordable luxury battery SUV in late 2023 as part of the Swedish brand’s ambition to go all-electric locally by 2026.

Three variants are available at launch: Extended Plus, Extended Ultra and Performance Ultra.

All three launch models feature a 69kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, with the range-topping Performance Ultra adopting an extra electric motor for all-wheel drive where other variants are rear-wheel drive.

It will sit below the current CMA-based XC40 and C40 small SUV twins, with the EX30 underpinned by the Geely-developed Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).

The 2024 Volvo EX30 small SUV is due in Australia later this year.

The Volvo EX90 electric SUV, to be sold alongside the current XC90, is expected to arrive in Australia in late 2024.

Previously expected to wear eXC90 or Embla badging, the Swedish luxury marque, owned by China’s Geely, has now confirmed its latest flagship SUV will be called EX90 and offer full self-driving technology.

Volvo has announced new active safety features debuting on the all-electric crossover – and fitted as standard – will include LiDAR sensors and an in-car driver monitoring camera.

It will also include bi-directional charging, with vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

The updated 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge electric SUV twins have debuted.

Volvo has improved the driving range and charging time for model-year 2024, while the entry-level, single-motor variants have shifted to a rear-wheel-drive setup.

It is the first time Volvo has offered a rear-wheel-drive vehicle in 25 years, following the discontinuation of the 900 Series, later known as the S90 and V90.

The revised small SUV twins will arrive in Australia towards the end of the year, with price rises between $4000 and $6500. Full details here.
